In a rubber boat, a NIOZ researcher analyzes various types of bottom-dwelling animals found in a sieve used to collect a sediment sample from the bottom of the Wadden Sea.

Research

At NIOZ, we advance fundamental understanding of marine systems, the way they change, the role they play in climate and biodiversity, and how they may provide sustainable solutions to society in the future.

Research themes

Our seas, oceans and coasts are inextricably linked to climate and biodiversity. At Royal NIOZ, we investigate this relationship from multiple angles.

Scientific departments

The NIOZ has four scientific departments: Ocean Systems, Coastal Systems, Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry, and Estuarine and Delta Systems. Within these departments, research leaders, postdocs, PhD students, analysts, research assistants and interns work on a wide range of topics and projects.
